On No Smoking Day, ITS Dental College spreads awareness about ill effects of nicotine addiction

Worldwide, Tobacco causes 8 million deaths every year, more than 6 lakh death per year are caused by second-hand smoke (SHS) &165,000 of these deaths are among children. Evidence released this year shows that smokers were more likely to develop severe disease with COVID-19 compared to non-smokers. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to millions of tobacco users saying they want to quit.

Uttar Pradesh is among the top 5 state in India where tobacco consumption starts at an early age (Under 18 years). Recently, Government of India has taken various steps towards curbing the tobacco related mortality and morbidity via various health promotional activities using audio aids, visual aids, health guides, advertisements in cinemas and patient’s story. 

On the occasion of No smoking Day, Vice Chairman, I.T.S- The Education Group, Sohil Chadha addressed the gathering. He said as the high mortality and morbidity rates among patients with the habit of tobacco chewing and smoking is very high, it is very important to take necessary steps to control this habit and I.T.S – The Education group has always worked in this area and has always endeavored and worked on it at community level.

The Department of Public Health Dentistry of I.T.S Dental College, Hospital & Research, Greater Noida celebrated “No Smoking Day” on 9th March 2022 to motivate patients, students and professionals. On this occasion, the patients visiting the OPD of I.T.S. – Dental College, Hospital & Research Centre, Greater Noida were sensitized regarding the ill effects of Tobacco usage. The online quiz on Tobacco cessation counseling was administered to all the students of I.T.S Dental College, Hospital & Research Centre, Greater Noida. The students took active participation in the quiz. The winners were awarded with the certificate of appreciation.  The camp was organized by the Department of Public Health Dentistry at Chirsi, Greater Noida. 148 Oral Health Screening were done at the camp venue along with the basic treatments like scaling, Fillings and Extractions. Tobacco cessation counseling were done to the patients who were in the habit of smoking or chewing tobacco. Dr. Sachit Anand Arora, Principal, I.T.S Dental College, Hospital & Research Centre, Greater Noida highlighted the different forms of tobacco and its side-effects on the body along with a brief about tobacco cessation counseling. He urged all the students not to go into drug abuse. On the occasion, students took oath to never consume any drug like tobacco in their life.
