On 25th September 2019 Noida Institute of Engineering and Technology (Pharmacy Institute) celebrated World Pharmacists Day on the theme “Safe and Effective Medicine for All”. The program was inaugurated by the welcome address of Dr Vinod Kapse, Director NIET). Dr. Avijit Mazumder, Director, Pharmacy Institute of NIET highlighted the various roles of Pharmacist ranging from the compounding of drugs to development of newer molecules to combat the global threat of cancer and drug resistance. The pharmacists have to play an important role in pharmacovigilance and patient counseling in the coming era to ensure drug safety and accomplishment of mission of Ayushman Bharat. The thalidomide disaster in 1957 leading to seven thousands infants born with deformed limbes has laid the World Health Organization (WHO) to redefine the role of pharmacist in healthcare system. Pharmacist should not only dispense the drug but also carefully scrutinized the prescription of the physician. They should bring to the notice of the physician in case of any probable combination which leads to drug- drug interaction or food drug interaction.
Dr. Praveen Pachori, Director (Project & Planning) NIET illustrated with lucid examples the various challenges pharmacist need to face with respect of development of personalized medicine. The chief guest Mr. Inder Singh Chauhan, Executive Member Pharmacy Council of India, explained the increasing importance in the role of pharmacist to detect drug-drug and drug-food interaction and thereby guiding the physicians to impart quality treatment to the patients . He asked all the students to take oath to insure that no patient should be victim of unsafe and ineffective medicine. All the citizen should be educated about proper storage and handling of drugs. Therapeutic drug management is need of the hour to overcome various incidents of adverse drug and hypersensivity reactions. He urged the various pharmacy institution of the country to impart quality education to produce qualified professionals. Pharmacy Council of India has taken a leading role in this regard as there is mushrooming of pharmacy college in Uttar Pradesh. Exit examination for diploma students will be conducted by Pharmacy Council of India to prevent the mall practice of granting diploma’s to unqualified professionals without attending the classes. Pharmacy Council of India had already implemented standard curriculum for all its approved courses to be followed by all the institution of india to retain quality of pharmaceutical education. Dr Rupa Mazumder (Dean, Pharmacy Instt) delivered the vote of thanks. The students participated in various competitions like Power Point Presentation, Poster Presentation, Extempore, Label making competition and cosmetic preparation competition. The function ended with a valedictory program with prize distribution to the winners, participants and coordinators.
